Jasper’s Marmot Basin Becomes the First Alberta Ski Hill to Add New Family Safety Technology

Alberta expansion marks a full-circle moment for skiKrumb founder and delivers reliable, on-mountain tracking designed for skiers and snowboarders.
JASPER, ALBERTA — January 21, 2026 — Marmot Basin has become the first ski resort in Alberta to launch skiKrumb, a Canadian-developed, radio-based GPS tracking system designed specifically for ski resorts. Designed to overcome the limitations of cellular-dependent apps, skiKrumb provides a new layer of safety and connectivity for families and school groups navigating Jasper National Park this season.
Unlike phone apps or Bluetooth devices, skiKrumb uses a compact, wearable hardware device that operates independently of cellular service, using specialized radio technology to deliver reliable, real-time location updates every 10 seconds—even in tree-covered terrain, cold temperatures, and remote areas common in the Canadian Rockies. Guests can track family and friends, send SOS alerts, and replay their day on the mountain through the skiKrumb mobile app.

The launch comes at a time when Marmot Basin continues to invest in making skiing more accessible for families, including its Kids Ski Free program, which welcomes younger skiers to the mountain at no cost. With more kids exploring the slopes, skiKrumb adds an extra layer of confidence, helping families focus on fun, independence, and shared mountain moments.
For skiKrumb Founder and CEO Keith Macintyre, the launch at Marmot Basin is deeply personal. Growing up near Edmonton, Marmot Basin was the first major mountain he ever skied as a teenager, an experience that sparked a lifelong connection to skiing and mountain Culture.
“Marmot Basin is where my love for real mountain skiing began,” said Macintyre. “To see skiKrumb live here, helping families ski with confidence at the very resort that shaped my passion, is a full-circle moment I’ll never forget.”
The idea for skiKrumb was inspired years later, after Macintyre was briefly separated from his own child on the slopes, an experience he describes as the longest 45 minutes of his life— highlighting the need for better on-mountain connectivity.
“We built skiKrumb to preserve the freedom and independence that make skiing special, and to give families an effortless way to stay connected on the mountain,” he added. “That peace of mind, knowing exactly where everyone is, completely changes the mountain experience for parents.”
Professional skier and mother of three, Tessa Treadway of @freerange.family, has experienced that shift firsthand while skiing with her young sons. Known for raising her family to embrace adventure and independence on the mountain, Treadway says skiKrumb allows her to stay connected while avoiding becoming a helicopter mom. “Anytime I was feeling anxious, I could just pull out my phone, have a quick look and see where they were, put my phone away, and go and ski and have fun.”
“Skiing and Snowboarding should be about exploring and having fun. skiKrumb provides dependable, real-time tracking that works in the conditions we ski and snowboard in every day. Bringing this technology to Marmot Basin reinforces our commitment to family-friendly innovation and elevates the overall mountain experience.”— Colin Borrow, Director of Skiing, Marmot Basin
skiKrumb GPS trackers are now available for purchase or rent at Marmot Basin for the 2025/26 ski season, supporting the resort’s ongoing commitment to guest safety and exceptional on-mountain experiences.
Together, Marmot Basin’s family-focused programs and skiKrumb’s reliable on-mountain tracking create an environment where kids can explore freely—and parents can relax and enjoy the day.
